Being a recent breast cancer survivor, Diana is a stellar example of how laughter and a sense of humor played a very important part in her healing process. In her forthcoming books: "Controlled Hysteria, My Life on the C List" and "Cancer Etiquette for Dummies," Diana shares her experiences in a very funny way. Always trying to find the positive, when asked by her breast reconstruction surgeon if she wanted to go smaller or bigger, Diana quipped, "Well, when I fly and they ask me if I'm equipped to sit in the emergency row I want to be able to say, "Yes! I AM the flotation devise!"
Diana is a living testament to how her sense of humor got her through the difficult times. "People always tell me this is my journey. If that is so and life's a journey, then I most certainly forgot to pack!"
Among other things in her presentation, Diana rants and recants stories about her doctors, nurses, and her very expensive Hollywood plastic surgeon. (Out of network!) After all it is Hollywood.
Book excerpt: Three weeks post final stage implant Diana fell asleep in her bed with (no, not the Plastic Surgeon) the heating pad on her chest and got a second degree burn so bad it was down to the Allograft-if it wasn't dead then it certainly was now - so much for the expensive out-of-network plastic surgeon! During a mastectomy the nerves are cut leaving the breast numb so she could not feel the heat - but she certainly saw it. It was devastating. Now off to the Grossman Burn Center. (Notice how a lot of people have names that describe what they do for a living?)
Gas is now $4.80 a gallon in Malibu and closing in on accumulating to the price tag of the entire mastectomy and reconstruction not to mention the out-of-network plastic-surgeon)
Dr. Grossman is the guy who took care of Richard Pryor when he caught himself on fire and also Michael Jackson when his hair went ablaze making that Pepsi commercial. It's Hollywood! If your doctor hasn't worked on somebody famous he can't get Board Certified.
Through the tears Diana smiled, "Guess, my breasts were so hot they caught themselves on fire…" Then she cried. She only had them three weeks. They were like precious puppies snuggled against her- warm and healthy - Three weeks of feeling whole again and three weeks of not thinking about freakin' cancer. Now, three weeks until the damaged implant is removed, the skin sewn together and yet another skin expander put in. It felt like being in the movie "Groundhog Day." How could this happen?
The new implant will have to be smaller now. Guess this was just God's way of saying, "If I'd wanted you to have big boobs I would have
given them to you in the first place!"
"I suppose a lesson in accepting yourself as you are should be here…"
Diana has been a favorite speaker at many Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure luncheons over the years. Her many years of experience as a comedienne shines through as she delivers a heart-felt message about early detection and taking responsibility for your own health. She has everyone in stitches as she shares her journeys- some of her 'Oops' moments working with Tom Cruise in the hit movie, "Jerry Maguire," and an 'Oopsrah' moment on the Oprah Winfrey show. In the end, the audience is left with laughter and a more positive way to successfully deal with difficult problems and situations in the workplace and at home. They will feel energized, informed, and empowered with tools they can implement including how they can put together their very own "Giggle Box!"
